How classes work

Every skill grows through three steps: learn it, practise it, then test it in competition.

  1. Learn

Students learn the rules and techniques of chess from their teacher in online group classes.

  2. Practise

Practice matches with peers let students use what they have learned straight away.

  3. Compete

Tournament opportunities help students build confidence and experience.

A structured learning path

Four stages, from the first rules to tournament preparation, with separate pathways for beginners and advanced learners.

  1. Back-rank checkmate: the rook gives check and the king has no square to escape to.

    Stage 1

    Beginner

    Foundations

Know the board, the pieces and the full rules, and play a correct game.

    What students learn

    • The board and naming the squares
    • How each piece moves and what it is worth
    • Check, checkmate and stalemate
    • Castling, promotion and en passant
    • Basic checkmating patterns

By the end of this stage

Students can play a complete game by the rules without help.

  2. A fork: the knight attacks the king and the rook at the same time.

    Stage 2

    Beginner

    Tactics

Spot and use the tactical patterns that win material.

    What students learn

    • Forks
    • Pins and skewers
    • Discovered attacks
    • Counting exchanges
    • One-move and two-move puzzles

By the end of this stage

Students can spot simple tactics during a game and keep their own pieces safe.

  3. The Italian Game: both sides claim the centre and develop their pieces.

    Stage 3

    Advanced

    Strategy

Learn to plan ahead and understand how a game develops.

    What students learn

    • Opening principles
    • Controlling the centre and developing pieces
    • King safety
    • Pawn structures
    • Planning in the middlegame

By the end of this stage

Students can explain the reason for their moves and play with a plan.

  4. The opposition: whichever king has to move must give way, a key endgame idea.

    Stage 4

    Advanced

    Tournament preparation

Build endgame skill, calculation and competitive experience.

    What students learn

    • King and pawn endgames
    • Deeper calculation
    • Playing with a clock
    • Recording and reviewing games
    • Tournament rules and etiquette

By the end of this stage

Students can play tournaments with confidence and learn from their own games.

Skills that grow beyond the board

  • Concentration
  • Problem solving
  • Thinking ahead
  • Patience
  • Decision making
  • Good sportsmanship

What students need
